PHP handlers and file permissions
suPHP is one method historically used to run PHP applications. The handler used by your current domain must be checked in its hosting configuration; do not assume that older suPHP instructions apply.
If you are migrating a website or changing PHP settings, contact us with the domain and the setting you need to change. The correct method depends on the active PHP handler and application.
Use the hosting controls
When available, use cPanel's MultiPHP Manager to review the selected PHP version and MultiPHP INI Editor for supported settings. Do not paste old suPHP_ConfigPath, php_flag, or php_value rules into .htaccess without confirming they apply. Unsupported directives can prevent a website from loading.
Keep permissions restrictive
Permissions must allow the application to run without granting unnecessary access. Do not use 777 permissions as a general fix. A permission problem can also involve ownership or application-specific writable directories, so a single permission value does not fit every file.
If an older application depends on a retired PHP version or handler, update the application or discuss a migration plan rather than weakening the current environment.
